Good news for tradesmen—young adults today are more likely to call in professionals than attempt DIY repairs themselves. From changing light bulbs to inflating car tyres, Gen Z is outsourcing even the simplest tasks, creating more work opportunities for skilled tradespeople.
A recent survey by Halfords found that 18 to 27-year-olds are spending around €1,300 per year on jobs older generations would have tackled themselves.
The “GOTDIT” Generation: Get Others To Do It
DIY confidence among younger generations is dwindling, with some even being called the “GOTDIT” (Get Others To Do It) generation. Many prefer to hire professionals rather than attempt basic repairs, whether due to a lack of knowledge, safety concerns, or simply valuing convenience.
Here are some everyday tasks Gen Z is more likely to outsource:
- Replacing a light bulb – Nearly a quarter won’t attempt it, often worried about breaking the bulb or using a stepladder.
- Inflating a car tyre – Almost 50% would rather let a mechanic handle it.
- Hanging a picture frame – Over 10% prefer to hire a pro rather than risk uneven placement.
- Cleaning a car – More than 25% aren’t sure where to start and opt for professional detailing.
- Fitting a wiper blade – A surprising 65% admit they don’t know how to replace one.
Lack of DIY Skills or Just Smart Outsourcing?
The survey also found that many Gen Zers struggle to identify basic tools. One in five can’t recognise a spanner, and nearly 30% don’t know what a flathead screwdriver looks like. When shown a car engine diagram, only 34% could locate the battery.
But is this really a lack of skill, or just a shift in priorities? With busy schedules and easy access to professionals, many young adults see outsourcing as a practical solution rather than a failure.
A Growing Market for Tradespeople
For professionals in the trades, this trend presents a steady stream of work. From minor household fixes to car maintenance, there’s increasing demand for skilled workers who can handle tasks Gen Z prefers to delegate.
Next time you get a call to hang a picture or change a lightbulb, remember—you’re not just providing a service, you’re becoming the go-to expert for a generation that values your skills.
